Career Resources for College Students with Disabilities

Here are a few resources to get you started.  If you have any questions, please contact the National Center for College Students with Disabilities (NCCSD) at nccsd@ahead.org.  If you don't find what you need, please use the Search box on the home page or let us know - we'll do our best to find what you need.

Finding Jobs

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities
The WRP is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs.

Jobs with the Federal Government are listed at USAJobs.gov

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has tips for applying for federal jobs that are good to know for other kinds of jobs as well.

The publishers of Careers and the Disabled magazine offer Career Expos around the country each year. Check out the magazine itself for leads as well.

Internship Opportunities

The first stop in finding out about internships or co-operative education (co-op) opportunities is your campus Career Services office. They'll have access to a variety of programs and many work with the campus Disability Services office, so you can ask if they know of opportunities for disabled students.

Some additional programs to check out:

The Viscardi Center
The Emerging Leaders Internship Program places college students with disabilities in internships at a wide spectrum of businesses nationwide.

American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)
Each summer, AAPD places college students, graduate students, law students, and recent graduates with all types of disabilities in paid 10-week summer internships in Congressional offices, federal agencies, non-profit, and for-profit organizations in the Washington, DC area.

Resources from the U.S. Government

The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has several resources on their home page:
  • The Job Accommodations Network offers advice about accommodations at work
  • Disability.gov has a list of resources about employment for people with disabilities
  • You might be eligible for career services through the Department of Vocational Services. Find your local office.
  • The Veterans Administration is another good source.

General Resources about Careers

  • General information about how campuses can support students with disabilities in preparing for careers (from DO-IT - also see video to the right of this text)
  • Strategies for policymakers to improve career transition for students with disabilities, from the American Institutes of Research
  • Suzanne Tanner, creator of AbleSafety.org offers tips for finding your dream job
