Resources for Teaching Students with Specific Types of Disabilities

Before you begin...it is extremely important to not think about accommodations or strategies as a menu of items.  Each person with a disability is a unique individual with strengths and struggles that may or may not have anything to do with disability.  Also, an accommodation that works for one type of learner may benefit other students with completely different types of disabilities.  And universal design teaches that some accommodations may even benefit all the students in your classrooms!  With that said, this information is provided to give you some ideas to make your classroom more welcoming and accessible.  If you have specific questions or would like to talk about your course, contact the NCCSD at nccsd@ahead.org -- we have professors and researchers who would be happy to help.

  • Information about making science courses accessible to students with different types of disabilities - from the National Science Teachers Association; designed for high school teachers, but most is applicable to higher education, as well

  • Modules with information for faculty and students, information about strategies and technology that may assist students with a variety of disabilities, from the Access Project at Colorado State University
